Printmaking Techniques

Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix to another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving and lithography, while modern artists have expanded the techniques available to include screen printing.

Monotypie

Monotype printmaking is a quick and easy process. Technically, a monotype creates a single impression, resulting in a unique work on paper. This can be further enhanced by incorporating unique hand-colouring or collage. A variety of printing elements are used, resulting in a unique work on paper with each impression. There is no need to use a press. The results can be unexpected, subtle, bold and painterly, depending on how this adaptable and engaging method of image making is used.

Gelli Print

Gelli printing is a relatively new form of mono printing. It uses flexible printing plates to create textures and layers of colour.

Cyanotype

Cyanotype (also known as sunprint) is an innovative and non-toxic photographic printing process. The result is sometimes predictable and sometimes not, depending on a number of factors. The sun is used as a source of ultraviolet radiation, with the intensity and nature of the resulting cyanotype prints depending on the sun and surrounding weather conditions at the time of the experiment.

This is an excellent opportunity for those with no previous experience of cyanotype or printmaking to engage with an exciting and engaging solar print medium. The process we use is in fact an alternative photographic process that is rapidly gaining ground in printmaking.
